HNA Returns to Huge Demand for Learning in Louisville

It was back to in-person networking, education, and demonstrations as Hardscape North America welcomed record audiences at this year’s event.

Educational workshops were packed to capacity and tradeshow exhibitors reported productive visits with hardscape and landscape professionals looking to grow their productivity, profit, and market.

When the final numbers are in, we expect to report a highly rewarding event by all measures of success.

The 2021 HNA Awards presentation was also a huge success with an impressive collection of awards presented. See an overview of this year’s award winners here.

2022 will be another game-changing year as HNA event partner, GIE+EXPO rebrands itself as “Equip” with new show management and a new plan to maximize HNA presence already underway. As HNA show owner, ICPI welcomes new show manager, Bob Yoffe, a veteran of concrete industry show management (Northeast Hardscape Expo) to help exhibitors make the most of what is expected to be an even larger HNA crowd.

A new HNA event website is also being developed for launch in January 2022 to make the registration, event participation, and exhibitor service experience more attractive and easier to navigate.

NCMA and ICPI Join Precast Show 2022

The National Precast Concrete Association (NPCA) announced today that the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) and the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) will join NPCA and the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) at The Precast Show 2022 on March 3-5 in Kansas City, Mo.

With more than 100,000 square feet of exhibitor space and 5,000 individuals in attendance, The Precast Show is the largest precast-specific trade show in North America and the one place to find the industry’s most important suppliers and foremost equipment experts under one roof.

“We are excited to have NCMA, ICPI and their members officially join us at The Precast Show,” NPCA Chairman of the Board Ron Sparks said. “This decision to renew our relationship underscores our shared interests in the industry and our joint efforts to promote the use of precast concrete, concrete masonry and hardscape products across America.”

The Precast Show is the premier event within the concrete products industry,” NCMA Chairman of the Board Rocky Jenkins said. “Our members will benefit greatly from the integration of ICON EXPO into this event, as will the companies that supply our members, through increased exposure and the opportunity to come together with so many others across the industry.”

In addition to the trade show floor, The Precast Show includes industry educational sessions and networking events where the latest technology and ideas are shared and discussed. Precast concrete infrastructure products account for approximately $2.4 billion annually, and that figure is expected to increase as the United States looks to repair its aging roads, bridges, highways and rail system.

Along with NCMA’s ICON EXPO and ICON-Xchange tradeshow and events, NCMA and ICPI support an industry that produces and annually sells an estimated 2.5 billion concrete masonry and hardscape products in the United States and Canada with substantial gains from the previous year as a result of increased residential investments in outdoor living spaces.

“NCMA and ICPI members work side by side with NPCA and other organizations participating in The Precast Show on projects every day across the United States and around the world,” NCMA President Bob Thomas said. “We have much in common.”

“Setting the highest standards in product quality, sustainability and safety are at the foundation of all of our groups, making this a natural relationship,” ICPI Board Chair Marshall Brown said.

“With the introduction of the American Jobs Plan, we hopefully are entering a time of national investment in infrastructure that hasn’t been seen since the Interstate Highway System was launched in the 1950s under President Eisenhower,” NPCA President Fred Grubbe said. “It never has been more important for precast concrete associations and their members to work together in order to achieve common goals.”

###
Based in Carmel, Ind., NPCA has represented manufacturers of industrial plant-produced precast concrete products and the suppliers of products and services for the industry since 1965, providing members with the programs and information required to operate a successful precast plant. NPCA operates the industry’s largest and most comprehensive plant certification program, which is accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB).

Chicago-based PCI develops, maintains and disseminates the knowledge for the design, fabrication and erection of precast and prestressed concrete structures and systems. As a collaborative group of industry stakeholders dedicated to promoting the broader use of precast concrete systems, PCI engages its constituents through standards development, certification, research, marketing and education.

NCMA, based in Herndon, Va., represents the producers and suppliers of the manufactured concrete masonry and hardscape industry in the United States and Canada. NCMA advocates to safeguard the work of its members and promotes its members’ products as the first choice for designers, builders and property owners so communities are improved and made more resilient.

ICPI, based in Chantilly, Va., promotes the value of segmental concrete pavement systems. ICPI delivers education and technical guidance leading to awareness acceptance and use of segmental concrete pavement systems in the United States and Canada.

Rewarding Excellence Achieved in the Most Challenging of Times

Presenting the 2020 Hardscape North America Awards

Hardscape contractors, producers, and designers claimed top honors at the 2020 Virtual Hardscape North America Awards ceremony on January 26th during ICPI’s special Virtual HNA education event. Each year, HNA Awards recognize leading residential and commercial hardscape achievements creating walkways, patios, pool decks, outdoor living kitchens and living spaces, and driveways as well as commercial plazas and streets.

While conditions in 2020 were quite different, these projects proved the pursuit of excellence can prevail.

Hardscape teams received awards for a diverse and awe-inspiring group of projects juried by industry experts for excellence in project design, quality, compatibility, and construction. HNA Awards reveal the highest level of detail from planning through project completion to produce exceptional results for project owners. The presentations demonstrated that designers, product manufacturers, distributors, and installers must all play collaborative roles to achieve successful projects worthy of industry-wide recognition.

Each year entries received from across the United States and Canada continues to grow. This year, a record 169 projects competed among 18 hardscape categories, including clay brick, segmental retaining walls, porcelain, vintage installations, concrete pavers, a combination of hardscape products, natural stone, and outdoor living features. Projects completed between November 1st, 2016, and June 30th, 2020, were eligible for entry into the competition.

“Despite the unprecedented challenges we all faced in 2020, HNA Award honorees remained dedicated to delivering excellence. The impressive projects recognized reflect great creativity, attention to detail, and collaboration between designers, manufacturers, and installers. We’re proud to honor their exceptional accomplishment.”

2019 Hardscape North America Raises the Bar Once Again

Each year, the Hardscape North America (HNA) joins GIE+EXPO at the sprawling Kentucky Exposition Center for North America’s largest event for landscape and hardscape professionals.

With over 18,000 total attendance at the combined HNA and GIE+EXPO event, hardscape industry presence at North America’s largest landscape expo continues to grow. Contractor attendance at HNA, an Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) event, and GIE+EXPO jumped 12 percent this year, with more than 15,532 landscape and hardscape professionals in attendance.

The Hardscape North America annual event presents a unique opportunity to reach contractors, designers and municipalities with an interest in hardscape industry products and services. A new “Hardscape House” pavilion hosting numerous hardscape demonstrations and the HNA Installer Championship was a popular attraction throughout the event.

Education Courses, Certification Testing and Workforce Development programs at HNA provide enormous opportunities for career growth. Highlights of this year’s education program included sessions on leveraging online reviews to grow a hardscaping business, improving profitability, and a discussion on finding the next generation of hardscape installers. Each session provided participants with ideas they can use right away to make a positive difference in their business.

Dealer-exclusive expo hours, training and networking events received high marks from HNA dealer attendees. Dealers participated in roundtables that were deeper dives into topics including using contractor programs as a business growth tool, inventory control, and drafting new talent into the business. Other sessions included differentiating your business, top-notch customer service, and upselling.

“HNA gets bigger and better each year, reflecting ICPI’s industry achievements and the growing demand for segmental pavement systems, segmental retaining walls, natural stone, and hardscapes,” said Charles McGrath, ICPI’s executive director. “A growing market is creating expanded opportunities for hardscape contractors and dealers, and HNA is North America’s biggest event of the year for these professionals.”

In addition to the trade show floor, HNA featured:

  • Outdoor hardscape demonstrations in a continuous build format

  • Numerous installation and business educational opportunities for contractors

  • A program exclusively geared towards helping dealers and distributors grow their businesses

  • The Hardscape North America Installer Championships with 13 teams competing from the United States and Canada

  • The 2019 HNA Hardscape Awards, which honor projects by contractors building residential walkways, patios, driveways, commercial plazas, parking lots, and streets using concrete pavers, clay bricks, segmental retaining walls, and a combination of hardscape products

HNA 2020 is scheduled for October 21-23. For more information, visit www.HardscapeNA.com.
